14/7/08 21:07I'm a Hooters Girl. I had orientation and my first training shift will be Wednesday morning.
There a lot of things that seem really cool -- the boss, the work environment, etc -- and a lot of things that will be a big inconvenience (at the very least until I get used to them). I'll have to wear at least minimal make-up, I think mascara and lip gloss, which I never learned to properly wear and wash off. Yeah, not a girly girl here. I can't wear any jewelry but two studs per ear. Yeah, studs, not hoops. Not even my teeny tiny hoops. I mean, they're itty bitty. But whatever. I'll have to get a retainer for my tongue piercing... and at least some days I'll have to take my industrial out, though since I have to wear my hair down it can cover it sometimes. I have to get make-up to cover the tattoo on my wrist since I can't wear a bracelet to cover it, which stinks. It's so small. And I have to take off my Batman necklace, but I think I'll just wind it around the strap of my pouch thing.
Some rules I don't get. Like my necklace and tattoo are super conversation starters, which is a big thing at Hooters. I guess it's a precedent, because if I can wear my tattoo then why can't a girl with one a tiny bit bigger wear hers too? And the next girl's will be a little bigger... etc. I dunno about the necklace, but oh well.
I have to get all white tennis shoes. They're supposed to be Skechers but I may be able to get away with another brand if I'm lucky. I hope so. They're supposed to be $30 at work to buy, but they don't have my size (damn big feet), and they're $50+ elsewhere, including an actual Skechers store. So yeah, that plus tattoo cover-up and eventually make-up I'm sure. And Wednesday I have to buy the socks and pouch before work, but those shouldn't be too expensive I think. $12 or so I think?
A Hooters waitress there today is a girl I worked with at The Coffee Bar on campus my first semester. Stephanie. She was really nice when I worked with her before. She remembered me today and chatted with me for a minute or two. It's nice to know someone already. Plus the girl I had orientation with was really nice. Natasha. She's in her 30s though, I don't know how much we could have in common... though she looks only a little older than me. She's aging extremely well, apparently.
The manager is amazing. He's kind of snarky, but he's super protective of the girls. He told us about a guy he had to physically throw out once for grabbing a girl in an indecent way. Apparently it's very uncommon for anything like that to happen but on the rare occasion it does, they're ready for it. Which is comforting.
The money will be so much better, and I think I'll really like the atmosphere, but there will be a hell of a lot of adjusting. I've never been a waitress before, for one thing.
Um. Oh. Very shallow thing that made me happy and would make feminists scream and pull their hair out: the manager said, "We don't hire ugly people, fat people, or men. We went to the Supreme Court so I could say that. I only hire hot girls." And, well, he hired me. :D I know, I know, most shallow thing ever. But everyone loves a compliment.
ETA Also, I may not have to change my availability at Starbucks. Starbucks schedules so far in advance that it may work well with the Hooters scheduling system, which is to mark your availability a week in advance. As long as you give a real reason for not being able to work, they usually won't make you.
