3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?
I put together random syllables until I come up with something I like. Usually I have some feeling for how the name should sound--long or short, harsh or soft. Sometimes I find something good quickly, but other times I just can't be satisfied. I've been known to change a name after a while because it just never really felt right. But I've come up with some weird ones. Lately, I'm trying to concentrate on making sure they're pronounceable.
