They scheduled 10 morning and 12 evening girls on New Year's Eve, including me when I put in the schedule request book that I couldn't because I'd be in Florida. Admittedly this wasn't true; I just promised Danny I'd take New Year's off since I worked on Halloween and it really killed the holiday for him. And maybe I wouldn't have complained if they'd scheduled me for just the morning... a Wednesday morning, I could make some good money! But they scheduled me as a double. On New Year's Eve. When I said I couldn't work. Worse, they only scheduled me two days that week.

If this was the first time they'd pulled some crap like this I might just have said, okay, I'll work the morning but tell them I can't work as a double or I'd miss my flight. (Not going to give up the flight story, I'd be caught in a lie, which is bad, haha.) I mean, I know it's not good work ethic to say I'll be in another state to get out of working, but I worked Halloween and I volunteered to work Christmas Eve (though they didn't schedule me, no; not when I could work), and I knew there was no other excuse that would get me out of work for the New Year.

And I'm just getting sick of them. I mean, they already pulled this crap the weekend before finals when I genuinely couldn't work because I needed to study and go to study sessions. I didn't end up having to work, but they weren't just going to let me out of it. There were six girls scheduled; they had me stay until the other five girls showed up and then said I could go since they only needed five girls. Now, if one of those girls had chosen to flake that morning, I would have suffered even though I was the one with the valid excuse. I was so stressed out that morning, and crying, because I still can't control myself when I'm upset.

So basically the ruling is that if I get fired over this, then good riddance, because what once was a very fun job has just gotten to be a pain in the ass much of the time because of Jordan. Why do I have the worst luck with managers?

But yeah, this New Year's Eve catastrophe is awful. I mean, obviously they don't need 10 girls in the morning and 12 girls at night. I think they're just expecting some girls to not show up, and they're hoping enough will that they'll have enough girls to run shift. I get it, but it's also stupid, since I'm sure all the girls see that. It might make it easier for them to not show up. The managers also posted a preemptive strike on the wall: something like, schedules are based on the store's needs and the calendar sales winners. If you have a problem, don't go to a manager, they won't change your schedule. Try to find a girl to cover your shift.

Total BS. And the calendar sales thing is a lie, too. Foon won I believe, or at the very least got second place, and she didn't want to work New Year's, but she was scheduled to close on bar. Jordan even circled her name and wrote that if someone wanted to cover the shift for her, they should call her, which indicates that he knew very well she didn't want to work and scheduled her anyway, despite the promise that the calendar sales winners wouldn't have to work the holidays.

Can I go strangle someone please?

But anyway, I'm seriously thinking about trying to become a personal trainer. They have a class for it at Maryland, it's 8 weeks, two days a week, only $160. Not for credit, but it does give you all the materials you need to study for ACE certification, plus a 20% discount on taking the ACE certification. I'd do that instead of trying to buy a rowing machine, haha, since I can't in good conscience spend money on both.

Anyway, the class starts February 16th, and it meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6, which is something I can manage. Then in the middle-end of April they have open interviews for joining the gym staff, so I could apply to be a personal trainer (they website says personal trainers are students who are often either certified or in the process of getting certified). I think I'd stand a better chance at that then I did before just going for something general and not even getting there early. I'd get there so early this time... Anyway, I'd be done with the personal trainer class, though whether or not I'd have taken the certification yet I have no way of knowing.

What I'm wondering is how much student personal trainers make. I know the rate for one training session is $32 for a student and $40 for a nonstudent, but I imagine the gym takes a good chunk of that. It'd be good, though, as something extra on the side. It's not like a real job where you get scheduled in four hour chunks or more; I'd just be available something like Tuesdays and Fridays before class, Mondays and Fridays after class, and maybe Sundays. No interference with my planned Hooters schedule at all (assuming I'm still working there). And if they had room, I'd gladly also work as weight/fitness staff.

It'd be awesome though. It'd give me extra motivation to go to the gym. For starters I'd already be there for class next semester and then for sessions assuming I get the job... and also, you can't very well be an unfit personal trainer!

I think that once the gym reopens I'll schedule a fitness test thing. It's $20 and it's with a personal trainer, so it'd be good on multiple levels. I could talk to the trainer about the job, see what my level of fitness is like, and probably get some good tips for staying healthy and fit. Woo!

Of course, the interviews in April would be for summer and fall work, which means my current schedule wouldn't apply. But that's okay. I'll endeavor to make the best schedule possible for work next semester. I may even be able to have class only three days a week because by then I'll be done with French. We'll see.

But I'm so excited! I just need a chance to talk it over with Danny.

Ok I'm officially jealous. We don't have personal trainers at our gym. :< I would totally want you to be mine, too! *sigh* Oh well. It's awesome that you can do that. I hope it works out!

That sucks about New Years eve. I'd really consider your other employment options -- retail and food service are bitches when it comes to schedules. I'd look for some sort of web design job, one where perhaps you can set your own hours, and get something more along the lines of $10-12 an hour steady.

As for the personal trainer thing -- yeah! Do it. Sounds like something right up your ally. You'd be giving me tips then, and not vice versa.

I can make better money in a restaurant easy, though. If I can deal with the crap. Meh.

But I can't wait to try those classes :D

You're probably right. How goes winter writing? Apparently GRRM did a lot of his stories during winter break. I'm going to try to overhaul a few of mine before January 5th when I go back to working full time. Goodness knows I could've used some extra money (even a small fiction sale), but it seems like this January is likely to be dry.
