My balance leaves me, and the ground rushes up to meet my hands. The whip writhes away from me across the dirt, and when I look up into Risk’s face, he’s gloating. I failed. I look over to Silk, expecting… contempt? Amusement? It’s not there—nothing is. His face is blank but for his usual hint of a smile.
It’s not over til his sword’s at your neck. I roll to the side, and the whip is back in my hand as I reach my feet. Risk rolls his shoulders and grins. “This time it’s for real.”
I’m ready. I smile.
